Comparing different floral resources on the longevity of a parasitic wasp
نویسنده
چکیده
1 The effects of floral resources of several important non-crop host plants of Lygus lineolaris on the longevity of Anaphes iole , one of its natural enemies, was studied. 2 Median longevity of A. iole wasps provisioned with floral resources ( Erigeron annuus , Oenothera speciosa , Lamium amplexicaule , and Capsella bursapastoris ) was in the range 1.27 – 3.24 days, and did not differ from wasps in the distilled water only control (1.46 – 2.81 days), but was less than median longevity of wasps provisioned with distilled water + sucrose (5.30 – 12.46 days). No difference in longevity was observed between gender, although females usually lived slightly longer than males. 3 High-performance anion-exchange chromatography analyses of O. speciosa floral nectar revealed that the major carbohydrate components were sucrose, glucose, and fructose. 4 The results indicate that the floral resources of some non-crop plants that serve as important reproductive hosts for L. lineolaris offer little or no benefit to A. iole .

The missing stink: sulphur compounds can mediate a shift between fly and wasp pollination systems.
The radiation of the angiosperms is often attributed to repeated evolutionary shifts between different pollinators, as this process drives diversification of floral forms and can lead to reproductive isolation. Floral scent is an important functional trait in many pollination systems but has seldom been implicated as a key mechanism in pollinator transitions. In this study, we suggest a role fo...
متن کاملFloral resources impact longevity and oviposition rate of a parasitoid in the field.
1. The use of floral resource subsidies to improve herbivore suppression by parasitoids requires certain trophic interactions and physiological changes to occur. While the longevity and fecundity of parasitoids are positively affected by nectar subsidies in laboratory studies, the impacts of floral subsidies on the fecundity and longevity of freely foraging parasitoids have not been studied. 2....
متن کاملLarger Fig Wasps Are More Careful About Which Figs to Enter – With Good Reason
Floral longevity reflects a balance between gains in pollinator visitation and the costs of flower maintenance. Because rewards to pollinators change over time, older flowers may be less attractive, reducing the value of extended longevity. Un-pollinated figs, the inflorescences of Ficus species, can remain receptive for long periods, but figs that are older when entered by their host-specific ...

Fertility, developmental time and adult longevity of walnut aphid, Chromaphis juglandicola (Kalt.) and its parasitoid wasp, Trioxys pallidus (Hal.) were studied under controlled conditions with a constant temperature of 26±2oC, relative humidity of 60±5%, and 16:8 (L:D) photoperiod. Populations of walnut aphid and parasitoid wasp were reared on walnut seedling in a growth chamber. The mean deve...
متن کاملNo fitness consequence of experimentally induced polyandry in a monandrous wasp Fitness from polyandry in a monandrous wasp
Tests of the effects of multiple mating by females on female fitness have been primarily with polyandrous species, where a benefit to multiple mating has usually been found. In contrast, no such benefit was found here for the parasitic wasp Spalangia endius, a highly monandrous species. Females that mated only once prior to oviposition exhibited a rapid decline in daughter production long befor...
